First, you fin Welcome to Better at English! This site is devoted to helping non-native speakers improve their English. For all you non-native speakers out there, on this site you’ll find short lessons, listening activities, tips, and advice that can help you improve your English in as little as two minutes per day. All free! (The site is supported by the modest income generated by the ads and by your generous donations.)

My name is Lori, and I’m the owner, maintainer, principal writer, and fez-sporting Grand Poobah of Better at English. In non-virtual life I work as a corporate language instructor, editor, and translator in southern Sweden. But I’m not Swedish — I emigrated from southern California as an adult. If it means anything to you, I hold an RSA CELTA, a BS in Education and an MA in English, for what those are worth (add me to the list of people who think that the school of LIFE is where real learning takes place).

Why do I run this site? Mainly because I think that just about everything to do with learning, psychology, languages, and language learning is pretty neato stuff, and this site gives me the chance to do something productive with my interest. But it’s also grown out of my years of experience with frustration with teaching English as a foreign language to adults. Most of my students want to practice and improve their conversational English. Unfortunately, most mass-market English teaching materials SUCK when it comes to providing examples of authentic, informal, everyday conversations; the dialogs are contrived, stilted and boring, and reflect the wishful thinking of textbook writers rather than authentic conversational usage. I aim to provide authentic conversations with transcripts and language notes for learners (and teachers) of English who are looking for a (hopefully) fun alternative to conventional ELT materials. My main focus is on idioms, slang, phrasal verbs and colloquial English, but I delve into other vocabulary too.
